The Prospect Park Zoo is a twelve acre (4.86 ha)[2] zoo located off Flatbush Avenue on the eastern side of Prospect Park, Brooklyn, New York City. Its precursor, the Menagerie, had opened in 1890. The present facility first opened as a city zoo on July 3, 1935. After 53 years of operation as a city zoo run by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, Prospect Park Zoo closed on June 1988 for reconstruction.[5] The closure signaled the start of a five year, $37 million dollar renovation program, that, save for the exteriors of the 1930s-era buildings, completely replaced the zoo. It was rededicated on October 5, 1993[1] as the Prospect Park Wildlife Conservation Center,[6] joining an integrated system of four zoos and one aquarium managed by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).[7] The Prospect Park Zoo presently offers children's educational programs, is engaged in restoration of endangered species populations, runs a Wildlife Theater and reaches out to the local community through volunteer programs. As of 2007, the zoo housed nearly 630 animals representing 141 species; it was visited by about 234,000 people in 2007.

I visited the museum with my 2 1/2 year old son today. I was a bit apprehensive in view of certain reviews in this page. What a surprise then, to have found that these reviews were totally wrong. The BCM is an extremely well organized, well kept place. Very clean and painstakingly planned to give the children a great experience. The staff is helpful and considerate. The idea of having a few different levels, each with distinct entertainment possibilities, is really good. My son enjoyed a lot the little bus next to the entrance of the tunnel. He loved to be able to sit at the drivers seat. I saw other children being mesmerized by the experience. In the back, the rows of seats also were a nice play opportunity, and the video that was playing, about Brooklyn and its diversity, truly enjoyable. The little stores in the side of the tunnel were quite nice. The tunnel itself, a good idea, along with the nature exhibits. The pit with bits of cork and mock plants, a ...‎ More »

We did not go into the greenhouse. The lower level has plenty of enjoyable moments. We loved the tiny fish tank and the low room below the stairs. My son was full of wonder at the possibilities of such a new space. The small music system close by was also very appreciated, as was the table with the crab tank. The science room has the python and other great animals. We reached when the little iguana was being fed, a great source of interest :) The benches with coloring pens and paper offered lots of fun. The toddler section, close to the entrance, contains many subsections, all with specific themes. We found very enjoyable the music structure, with a tunnel, overpass and slide, quite creative and safe. The kitchen section may need some overhaul, however, as it lacks objects of interest. The water section was really nice and the plastic protectors for clothes, truly necessary ;) The small shop has a good selection of toys, educational in nature. We did not visit the cafe, sadly. After three non stop hours of fun, my son started to get sleepy. Even in such a tired state, he protested our leaving the museum. The guard smiled and waved to him, saying that he sees such resistance every day. It is obvious why: the BCM is definitely a winner. Highly recommended!

I just got back from the museum and I was glad that I went....I was not glad that I got there late (5 min) as they are free from 10am-11am on the weekends and also 1st fridays from 5pm-8pm. I had to pay 22.50 for me and my two boys. ...‎

Pretty even in winter‎

Admission was free for us who visited on a winter weekday. It's true it was really cold but we were dressed for the weather (thermal underwear, T-shirt, fleece, jacket, hat and gloves, etc.). The garden was pretty even in late December. There was a blue heron on a frozen pond in Japanese garden who was trying to catch a fish through a crack on the ice. My 9 yo son was very excited to see him up close. It's a very enjoyable stroll across the garden. You can get hot chocolate and food at the conservatory (hot house). Bonsai collection there was very interesting, too. People at Visitor Center were helpful.‎
